Hosp staff identification format
Sault Area Hospital is moving to our new Hospital site in early March, where we will have new identification name tags. The Mental Health and Addictions Program has historically used only first names on name tags, so that patients aren’t able to contact staff at home. Our new Hospital standard is to have first and last names of all staff, which is causing our staff some concern.
I am wondering what the practice is in other Schedule One hospitals and would appreciate your comments. Thanks

Hi Jane, Both London Health Sciences Centre and St. Josephs Regional Mental Health Care staff wear name tags with both first and last names. It hasnt been a problem but lately some staff at RMHC are raising concerns. At this time, there is no intent to change the practice. AT Markham Stouffville Hospital, in the mental health program, the inpatient staff only have their first name on their badge and will provide their last name if specifically requested by a patient or their SDM. They must have a badge on at all times, their picture is on the badge and the picture must be visable at all times, no stickers etc hiding their picture. The mental health leadership team and outpatient staff all have both first and last name displayed. We have had issues with staff being stalked at their home by patients and while not showing the last name will not guarantee a patient will not find out their surname, it is considered by our staff to be an important safety measure.

Hello Jane Our inpatient and outpatient mental health programs follow the policy that has been set for all clinical areas within the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance. Our policy states that staffs full name, position and department will be noted on their I.D. We reference the CON standards for this practice. At the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario, we include first and last name, and professional designation on the ID badge. To date this has not presented any issues for us. Karen Tataryn

Hi Jane As you know, I have worked in Mental Health my entire career in both acute mental health and in specialized tertiary mental health care. 5 Schedule 1 hospitals in all. Ever hospital I have worked in had both first and last names on the name tag (including mental health), as well as designations. As our two North Bay hospitals amalgamate to become the North Bay Regional Health Centre, we too researched other hospitals and the different college standards around this issue and approaches do vary. Surprisingly, in our surveys, E.Rs had more issue with full names than mental health programs. I can share that summary with you if it would be helpful but the end result was that we are going ahead with first and last names, and designations on our new name tags in all areas of the organization. We felt we needed to ensure we were following our corporate values. Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you would like our survey. College of Nurses of Ontario requires that a nurse identify himherself to a patient and the patient is entitled to know the name of their caregiver (if they should ask and unless there are safety or risk issues). Homewood has held similar discussions and some of our staff is very set on not disclosing their full name unless they are asked outright. So we have compromised and I am including our current HR policy on Staff Identification It is the policy of the Homewood Health Centre that all employees and volunteers must wear identification badges issued by the Hospital when on the premises. Badges must be worn in a visible location during work hours (i.e. chest level so that the individual can be readily identified). Identification badges are issued by the Human Resources Department. They remain the property of the Homewood Health Centre and are to be returned to Homewood upon termination (Reference Termination Policy 2-130). Identification badges for volunteers are issued by the Volunteer Services Department. 1. Human Resources provides one identification badge free of charge at time of hire, at job reclassification or departmental change and for legal name change. 2. Lost or broken badges will be replaced by Human Resources. The employee is responsible for notifying the Human Resources Department and for the current replacement cost of a lost badge. 3. Badges are to contain the following First line - full first name or first and last name or, first name and initial of surname. Second line - Classification for clinical staff or Department for non-clinical staff. Titles for non-clinical staff are optional for management. At Cornwall Community Hospital, staff are required to wear their IDs with first name showing and another come identifier. We use their hospital ID number. This is a change that we are just about to implement as previously staff in high risk areas only had their first names showing. Heather Arthur |
